Content marketing versus copywriting

Understanding the difference between these two powerful marketing tools

Are you confused about the difference between content marketing and copywriting? Do they mean the same thing?

You're not alone.

While both involve creating written content, usually in the digital space, they serve different purposes and have distinct goals.

Content marketing uses valuable, relevant content to attract and engage a specific target audience—typically at the top of the funnel—or people who don't know you yet. Once the content pulls them in, it should also position your brand as the best—so when the reader is ready to make a purchase, they know to buy from you. Some of the most common forms of content marketing are blog posts, videos, infographics, e-books, and more. (This is me, content marketing right now.)

According to HubSpot, 82% of marketers actively use content marketing. And businesses of all sizes can benefit by including content marketing in their overall marketing strategy.

While content marketing aims to inform and build trust, copywriting is about crafting persuasive language to sell a product or service. The goal is to convert readers into paying customers. Copywriters use psychology and sales techniques to get the reader to take action—most often to buy something. Copywriting is typically used in advertising and sales materials, such as website landing pages, product descriptions, and email campaigns.

Content marketing is about educating and building relationships with your audience, while copywriting focuses on converting them into customers. Both are important, but they serve different purposes and should be used in different contexts.

Both content marketing and copywriting are powerful tools. They generate leads and converting them into sales. You need both.
