How I use AI

3 tips to be a better writer

It might be surprising to hear that, as a professional writer, I use AI.

I know the robots will supposedly make my job extinct but for now, it's a darn good thought partner and creative spark generator.

Here are 3 ways I use AI:

1. Transcribing interviews with Fathom

This free software records my Zoom calls and immediately gives me an AI summary and full transcript.

I save time copying and pasting quotes instead of retyping them from my notes. Also, I am a much more engaged interviewer because I don't have to write down every word verbatim.

2. Brainstorming headlines with ChatGPT

I could spend hours brainstorming the perfect headline for an article. Instead, I use this prompt: "Embody the role of a copywriter and brainstorm ten headlines about <insert overview of article>. Make them concise and clear."

Usually, I don't like any of the ten, but they give me enough ideas to generate my own headline quickly.

3. Ideating, searching, generating synonyms

Bye, bye beloved Thesaurus.com. Nowadays, when I find myself overusing a word in an assignment, I ask ChatGPT to brainstorm alternatives.

I especially love asking it to come up with words for a cliche phrase or sentiment like "What are some other terms for new frontiers?"

Which of these tips will you try?

xoxo,
Alison
